The Caps apparently really want to face the Florida Panthers: the Islanders beat the Capitals 5-1

The Washington Capitals without Ovi again faced the New York Islanders with a chance to edge out the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Metropolitan Division. Could they try to help themselves avoid this Florida Panthers first round streak?

Brock Nelson and Anders Lee both hit on the power play to give the Isles a 2-0 lead after twenty minutes. Nada in the second. Jean-Gabriel Pageau for the third. Kyle Palmieri for four. Josh Bailey dunks on the Caps for five years.

AJF with his second career goal.

The Islanders beat the Capitals 5-1.

  • The New York Islanders are so relentlessly boring and their style really, really works when they get the kind of calls they got in the first period. They literally did nothing five-on-five, but received two power-play goals to give them a lead.
  • It would be nice if the Caps’ penalty kill hadn’t completely lost the plot…again. Four goals against five chances in four consecutive periods against New York.
  • I have no idea what that arbitration was. In three simple words, I would call it “ref show trash”. Alan May was right to be confused by some of these calls.
  • The second was no good. The islands just did their thing and bored the game to death. I liked the finish and AJF fired two separate cross-check penalties on Adam Pelech, but not enough offensively.
  • I miss you all, Ovi.
  • Can they stop taking penalties like four seconds in their own power plays…please? Lord.
  • Something tells me Semyon Varlamov should have been in the other shirt tonight. It probably would have been a good idea, but hey, Vitek fooled me for about a month too.
  • Question for you. Do they look like they even cared one iota in this third period? Yeah.
  • That shot from Garnet Hathaway on Sebastian Aho was really bad and he’s incredibly lucky that he only finished two minutes and that Aho was unharmed. Oliver Wahlstrom tried to jump on him and made himself look like an absolute clown. Ole Wally was thrown on the ice as a child.
  • The power play without Ovi makes me never want to watch hockey again. The penalty kill has kind of gotten even worse in those last two games.

The Caps wrap up their regular season against the New York Rangers tomorrow. Will we see Alex Ovechkin?
