Swansea’s Atomic Beat Boys cover Shampoo’s ‘Trouble’ to benefit War Child
Swansea Independent Label REPEAT released today an EP of Atomic Beat Boysa band of 10-11 year olds through their big badger to print. The trio – Alex, Calwyn and Kaiden – covered Shampoothe pop-punk hit of 1994′Difficulty’.
The label Richard Rosewho teaches at Swansea Boys’ School and picked up a band of the same age to perform live in front of six million viewers on Blue Peter, recorded the song in lo-fi style on his laptop.
“From the moment they started experimenting with guitars, I was bowled over by their enthusiasm, creativity and hard work, and I love how they made the track their own.”
Shampoo manager since the 1990s Gillian Porter supports the press release, as does the press officer Caffy Sainte-Luce who said “How fantastic! I was singing! As a shampoo fan, I have to say this is an ace! »
The song’s links to Wales are long-standing – Shampoo, which was made up of school friends Jacqui Blake and Carrie crookedwrote Manic street preachers fanzine ‘Last Exit’ while they themselves were at school.
Contemporary Swansea musicians also praised the recording. ‘You’ll never forget your first time on the radio, and these boys deserve it for their enthusiastic rendition of this classic. The definition of punk. Amazing stuff!’ singer-songwriter replied Tom Emlyn who releases his first solo album next week. The remixes were donated by Jean-William Davies (Hymns for teenagers) and bubblegum punk icon Helen Love. About her remix, Helen explained, “I tried to make it a bit modern so the kids could hear that they can do pop music too.”
The Trouble EP is available to stream now, with very limited vinyl and CD copies available on R*E*P*E*A*T Bandcamp page here; these will be sold to raise funds for child of war to support children who suffer in wars around the world, including in Ukraine.
