Detroit producer Topside’s compilation mixtape Lost files collected final versions of a bunch of songs that I thought were meant to live exclusively while YouTube leaks for the rest of time, including Babyface Ray’s “Heartbreak Ave” and “Velvet” featuring King Hendricks. But Veeze’s “Ian’s the Devil” is easily the coolest song, with the Detroit rapper using AutoTune as oddly as anyone not named Duwap Kaine or Chief Keef. The vocal effects aren’t there to help her sing better; instead, they make him look as little human as possible. Right from the start, he’s almost dabbed, like he’s trying to speak underwater. This is the type of song you share with your friends with the disclaimer: Listen, listen to the whole thing several times and you will understand. They’ll hate it, and you might too, but I promise it’s awesome.
With artists releasing songs at a breakneck pace, it’s hard for average hip-hop to keep track of everything, no matter how exploited they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
