Lil Nas X Blasts BET Awards for a snub

The 2022 BET Awards nominations were announced today and Lil Nas X was nowhere to be found.

In a series of since-deleted tweets, the rapper called out the network for again snubbing him despite the success of his debut album. Monterowhich spawned hit singles like “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” and “Industry Baby” featuring Jack Harlow.

“Thank you bet price. once again, zero outstanding nominations,” he tweeted before adding, “black excellence!

When someone asked why he deserved to be nominated, Nas clapped back with receipts. “idk maybe 3 of the biggest songs of the last year and a critically acclaimed album,” he said. “I feel like that should have helped me a bit.”

Another person claimed he shouldn’t be eligible because he’s a ‘pop artist’, to which he replied, ‘No offense but you are literally Caucasian persuasive and trying to educate me on an awards show I watched my entire childhood. + it’s not hip hop awards + they have a pop category.

According to Nas, the snub is not just about him. “I don’t even have to be nominated,” the openly gay rapper wrote on Wednesday, which also happens to be the first day of Pride Month. “I just feel like black gay people have to fight to be seen in this world and even when we get to the top mfs try to pretend we’re invisible.”

Although he may not be attending the show, he joked that he “will be selling fish plates outside of the gamble rewards this year.”

This is the second year in a row that Nas has been snubbed. He was nominated for Best New Artist in 2020 but lost.

Nas delivered one of the most talked about moments at last year’s BET Awards when he performed “Montero.” In 2019, he performed his record hit “Old Town Road” with Billy Ray Cyrus.

While Nas was left out, his “Scoop” collaborator Doja Cat leads the 2022 BET Awards with six nominations, while Drake and Ari Lennox earned the second-most nods with four each. Other multiple nominees include Future, Young Thug, Baby Keem, Silk Sonic, Kanye West, and more.

Hosted by Taraji P. Henson, the 2022 BET Awards will air live Sunday, June 26 at 8 p.m. from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
