Today (July 15), DJ Premier released their first solo project in years. Hip Hop 50: Volume 1 is a five-song EP from legend Gang Starr. Each cup features the best MCs representing over 35 years of rap greatness. Along with appearances from Nas, Run The Jewels, Lil Wayne, Slick Rick and more, Remy Ma and Rapsody bond over the aptly titled “Remy Rap” for the first time.
On a classic Funk chop, Premier sets the tables. He scratches”with female def” and markers in the name of each MC. Remy Ma kicks things off with a brutal verse. “No lie, there’s only five women in the game that can really rap / Gain followers and fame, and a name, so they think / They can now be listed with the spitters, bitch, imagine that / It’s not I’m talking about your lace front when I say your shit is wiggety-wack / They know what’s gonna happen to their ass if Remy’s on the floor,said the MC who threw elbows at rap peers sometimes during his career of more than 20 years. She also points to her detractors. “They know my pen is crazy, but they won’t give me that / Every time I spit shit they say it’s really Pap,in reference to her husband. Some have speculated that Papoose wrote songs by Remyincluding those of 2017 “Sheether” diss to Nicki Minaj. Rem’ then lists his hits and affirms his beauty. Next, Remy flexes his freedom. “I rap when I want / I stopped having my girl / I was flying in pajamas when y’all wore pajamas,she quips about chartered private jet flights.

In his verse, Rapsody also takes a step towards the suitors. Rapsody begins as Remy ends. After a Lil Baby-related pun, Rapsody makes noises to mimic a crying baby. “Wah, wah, y’all crying, I’m on a different level / we’re not the same, you and I have different fears.“Moments later, she’s boasting, “Preemo hit me ’cause he know I’m dumb / Rap like I got a big dick and niggas choke / I never wanna be the wave, I’m the fuckin’ ‘ocean.” Premier worked on Rapsody’s She has game mixtapethe Jamla/Roc Nation spitter returning the favor with appearances on PRhyme 2 and “Shadows Crawl (Remix)” by Torii Wolf.
