Media and World Peace and Democracy
One of the most important aspects of the media in the modern world is the
development of the discourse on peace and democracy. If we
consider justice, liberty, and truth to constitute the
principal concerns of human societies, it must, therefore,
be conceded that the means to achieving these values is
through establishing peace and democracy at both national
and transnational levels.
Peace, which denotes the absence of war, is the only alternative – the
most desirable one in fact – to war, which according to
Arendt has completely
encompassed the 20th Century. As such, democracy
is also a favorable alternative to autocracy and tyranny
which still troubles many societies.
In this article, the author endeavors to illustrate how modern media play a
paramount role in promoting the discourse of peacemaking and
democratization at the dawn of the 21st century.
